PLANTATION HOUSE
PENDING
FUNCTION: Single Family Dwelling + Watch Tower
SITE AREA: 428 m2
FLOOR AREA: 400 m2
LOCATION: INDONESIA
The “Plantation House” is a small dwelling situated in the middle of an expansive oil palm plantation in Indonesia. Contrary to common assumptions, most established farmers in Indonesia do not dispose of their crops by burning in the open fields. In fact, a lot of fires are started by unregulated lone farmers which could rapidly spread into managed plantations. The owners are therefore very concern about fire hot spots occurring in dry seasons which may rapidly threaten their crops.
Our strategy for the house is to combine the dwelling with a watch tower, creating a panopticon that overlooks the expansive plantation. The bedroom floor, surrounded by loggias, is raised above the managed palm tree line of 6 meters. This creates an intermediate floor between the living and the bedroom floors, forming an outdoor space of respite from the hot afternoon sun, lifted away from the perilous plantation ground
